New regulations on betting sponsorship will affect 41 of 42 LaLiga clubs

A new Spanish law that will prohibit the advertising of betting companies inside Spanish football stadiums or on shirts, as well as imposing other restrictions on the gambling industry, will affect 41 of the 42 teams currently in LaLiga Santander or LaLiga SmartBank.
There are currently 10 clubs with a betting company as their main shirt sponsor - Leganes, Valencia, Sevilla, Osasuna, Levante, Alaves, Granada, Real Mallorca, Sporting Gijon and Girona - but there are many others with such sponsors on other parts of the kit.
Looking at the income of around 3m or 4m euros for Sevilla and Valencia, this will go down by an estimated 30 percent.
It'll be the same proportional kind of loss for the other top flight teams, even if their deals were worth between 1m and 1.5m euros.
Then, it remains to be seen how it'll hurt the second division teams.
The changes will even impact clubs that are less visibly sponsored by betting companies, such as Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid.
In fact, some of these sponsorship arrangements might be worth more than those of the teams who wear a company on their shirt.
As things stand, only Real Sociedad have completely rejected the money from betting companies, but even they will feel some effects because LaLiga as a whole will be impacted given that so many of the TV adverts surrounding football broadcasts come from this sector.
LaLiga even have an official betting deal and, in total, losses of around 80m euros are expected for the Spanish professional football industry.
Following recent tax rises, difficult negotiations with TV operators and the impact of the coronavirus, this is yet another financial blow for Spanish clubs.
While many agreed that such measures were going to be necessary to help avoid gambling addictions, they are concerned that the moment chosen is right now when there is already so much financial pressure on the industry.
In any case, it could be possible for such links with the gambling industry to remain in Spanish stadiums for the first few months of the 2020/21 season as the new law isn't expected to come into force until around November.
